What can a Respiratory Therapist do?

I'm going to school, so that I can learn how to do 4 things. Can't I watch a video, or something, instead of going to school for 3 years?

According to the Respiratory Therapy Act of Ontario, a Respiratory Therapist can:
  1. Perform a prescribed procedure below the dermis.
  2. Intubate beyond the point in the nasal passages where they normally narrow or beyond the larynx.
  3. Suction beyond the point in the nasal passages where they normally narrow or beyond the larynx.
  4. Administer a substance by injection or inhalation.

  1. Hey wait, you mean I also suffered through 3 years of school so I can administer a treatment? Maybe there's a video at the public library to help me be a dentist. I heard they make good money.

  2. You don't want to be a Dentist. They have to put their hands into patient's mouths. That's just plain nasty.

Now that I think about it, being able to do 4 things is a step up for me. I had a career in IT, based on one thing, my ability to RTFM (Read The F*ing Manual).

  3. LOL!

We had an obnoxious dad in the NICU a while back who drove everyone, RN's and RT's, crazy all the time. He constantly criticized and tried to do our work, to the point of touching my vent which nearly made me go kamikazi on him. TRYING to be civil, I asked, "Are you in the medical field?" and he responded snottily, "No, I've googled all this so I know how to do what you're doing."

    OMfreakingG!!!!!

I said "We went to school for this and please don't touch my vent again or I'll have to ask you to leave."

    I couldn't believe it.

School? Pffffttt...only for the retarded, apparently.

  4. I remember reading your posting, about that situation. I don't know how I would have reacted to that; probably not well.
