What have I done

I've pursued an interest in Science and Medicine as far as I need to. Science is interesting but I'm not interested in doing the work required to get a PhD and I hate working in a lab. Medicine is interesting but I dislike several things associated with patient care and working in a hospital.

I have a renewed interest, and enthusiasm, for my IT career and am going to go back to it without any second thoughts.

  1. H- I understand, I do. That was one of the reasons I took a year off, but in that year, and working every other Saturday in the hospital, taught me that I really did enjoy patient care and I was good at it...it was my calling. Within about 6 months working in the office I realized I was so unhappy and was the reason why I went back.

I'm so sorry it wasn't a fit. The worst thing about medicine initially for me was they can't prepare you for the uglies...such as pulling a tube to let someone die or having an old lady look at you while strapped to a full face Bipap mask begging you to take it off so she can eat. Or best yet, when the infant comes into the ER (or world) and is blue and not breathing.

Medicine is ugly, but there are rewards. But if you know it isn't your calling it is best to get out before it consumes you and makes you into a horrible practitioner.

And for your anonymous friend who doesn't have the balls to link back....

There are too many sub-par healthcare workers out there working because it's a paycheck and the best part about it they truly SUCK at what they do because they don't care. Just because it was a second career doesn't mean it's a calling and if you figure it out before you kill someone all the better.

  2. You and trauma junkie really fooled all of us! You guys sure talked a good game, but in the end, didn't have what it takes to practice health care. Are you sure you want to return to IT?Because in your August 2005 post, you indicate you hate IT. Anyways, best of luck.

  3. I truly hope this wasn't a rash decision. Very interested in knowing why the change? You appeared to be very enthusiastic & involved about Respiratory.

  4. Did you shawdow a therapist before you started? You have just wasted about 150 thousand dollars in lost income and school expenses.

  5. Yes, I did shadow a therapist, on 3 separate occassions. What's with all the animosity Anonymous? Why are you so pissed off about what I'm doing? Why should I actually care about what you think?

I was kind of sick of IT in 2005. Now I'm an IT junkie. I was up until 4AM last night reading IT stuff. I got up at 8AM, to continue with my reading, and have been going strong all day. I have never been that enthusiastic about anything related to Respiratory Therapy.

I'm a grown up. What I do doesn't negatively affect anybody else. I've got some money and am paying my own way. I can do what I want. Why should I live a life that other's want me to live? I shouldn't, escpecially one that some anonymous dude on the Internet wants me to.

  6. Lets see, you were never enthusiastic about respiratory therapy, yet you stayed in the program for two years...It just doesn't make sense to me...I don't believe you're telling the whole story. What happened, man?

  7. Found a renewed enthusiasm for something that I'm good at. Realized that I don't want to be an RT. Changed my mind.

  10. I am practicing RT in NY, I totally support your decision. I left my IT training to become RT, at least u r fortunate that u can go back and start where u left. What bothers me most in healthcare is the I don't care attitude of other healthcare professionals. There are some healthcare workers who are passionate and love what they do and it really shows in their work. I know patient care can be exhausting and demanding but some people are just there for their pay check & they treat patients and others like a garbage. They should be working in a butcher shop. Enthusiasm of few good ones and my patients keeps me in this field. Good luck and wish u all the success.

  11. I was actually freaking out a bit yesterday, about my employment prospects last night. I had two interviews today that went very well. I was almost despondent when I was driving to the first interview. Everyone seems to find my pursuit of an alternate career, and associated stories, very interesting. They also seem to think that I have acquired really good experience with very reputable organizations.

Have you every thought about getting into Health Infomatics? A Health Informatics person with an RT background would be a killer combination.

  12. Good for you. I completely commend your decision to do what you want, without second guessing or talking yourself into a job you don't want. It is too easy to justify things because of money spent, or income lost while going to school, or caring too much what others will think. LIfe is short, do what you want.

    All the best.

  13. I know it's quite an old post but I just want to ask if your now doing the thing you love to do. Because as far as I know if you enjoy doing your job things will be much easier for your career life...isn't it? I wish a good luck and hopefully your happy with what you do now.

    Thanks,
    Deborah of respiratory clinical

  15. Irrespective of receiving daily oral or future injectable depot therapies, these require health care visits for medication and monitoring of safety and response. If patients are treated early enough, before a lot of immune system damage has occurred, life expectancy is close to normal, as long as they remain on successful treatment. However, when patients stop therapy, virus rebounds to high levels in most patients, sometimes associated with severe illness because i have gone through this and even an increased risk of death. The aim of “cure”is ongoing but i still do believe my government made millions of ARV drugs instead of finding a cure. for ongoing therapy and monitoring. ARV alone cannot cure HIV as among the cells that are infected are very long-living CD4 memory cells and possibly other cells that act as long-term reservoirs. HIV can hide in these cells without being detected by the body’s immune system. Therefore even when ART completely blocks subsequent rounds of infection of cells, reservoirs that have been infected before therapy initiation persist and from these reservoirs HIV rebounds if therapy is stopped. “Cure” could either mean an eradication cure, which means to completely rid the body of reservoir virus or a functional HIV cure, where HIV may remain in reservoir cells but rebound to high levels is prevented after therapy interruption.Dr Itua Herbal Medicine makes me believes there is a hope for people suffering from,Parkinson's disease,Schizophrenia,Lung Cancer,Breast Cancer,psoriasis,Colo-Rectal Cancer,Blood Cancer,Prostate Cancer, siva.Fatal Familial Insomnia Factor V Leiden Mutation ,Epilepsy Dupuytren's disease,Desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor Diabetes ,Coeliac disease,Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease,Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy, Ataxia,Arthritis,Amyotrophic Lateral Scoliosis,Fibromyalgia,Fluoroquinolone Toxicity
